I got this for my Dell Dimenstion 2400 desktop as the name of the product mentions. Works great so far. I have not really see a major difference in processing power. First test would be when I load my video from camcorder and perform some editing....

P.S. May 2009: Crucial now charges $41.27 + $3.99 shipping. This totals less than the $55 I paid in 2007 with 'free shipping'. This second chip will bring me from 1.5 GB to 2 GB. I am not yet sure this will make a difference--but these days I am finding that I can use all the RAM I can get. If I ever get a new computer, I will try for 5-10 GB of RAM.

Here are my agreements for those who rate this product highly and my replies for those who do not:
This is my second Crucial chip for a Dell upgrade. Works just as perfectly as the first, which was for a second-hand laptop. Yes, nowadays you do need 1G RAM to reduce:
--slow boot-ups and shut-downs
--annoying hangups
--windows that appear and disappear very slowly
--that 'groping with a flashlight' cartoon.
(My PC has 2 RAM slots, each orginally with one 512 MB chip. So to use this 1GB chip, I must remove one, for a total of 1.5 GB.) After surfing the internet, this is as good a price as any. Plus, I am no expert, but I take Crucial at its word that it is a major prime manufacturer. I may be mistaken but to me, this implies that a Dell brand upgrade may cost twice as much but be exactly the same chip, and if not, almost certainly no better. Whereas your other bargain brand upgrade, rather questionable and no cheaper.
Just watch these little hurdles:
1. Sometimes another supplier, other than Crucial, takes the default Amazon listing. If so, click the "used and new" link to compare with the cost directly from Crucial. Usually this is the best overall value.
2. Currently there are 2 versions of this chip for the Dell 2400:
--(DDR PC2700, NON-ECC)
--(DDR PC3200, NON-ECC)
So, check your PC number (whatever that means) before ordering. (I did not check mine, but either it doesn't matter or I got lucky.)
3. Dust first and press firmly.
Use a vaccuum cleaner with a pointy nozzle to dust the chip slot. Also, make sure the chip's notch that is not quite in the middle is in the same location as the nib in the slot. Press hard. At first I thought maybe to leave the chip halfway in but then read the Crucial instructions: "May require 20-30 pounds pressure." So, with someone else holding the box, I pressed harder. As the chip goes in, the holding clips engage, all in one action. Done.
You know it's really working when:
a. You restart the computer and with XP it says, 'The memory has changed, press f1 to continue.'
b. Start . . . All Programs . . . Accessories . . . System Tools . . . System Information. The RAM is listed as 'Total Physical Memory.'
(But I can't find PC2700 nor PC3200 mentioned. Sorry I still don't know what that means. Better to ask at Dell, Staples, or your neighborhood geek before ordering.)

The item sold to me for a Dell Dimension 2400 series does not fit the memory slots that came with equipmente. So I lost the money invested in the chip.
