Excellent response and shipping times.
These devices do work as advertised and allow a bit of system overclocking without having to tweak the system RAM timings. My application was for a 667 MHz Bus Dell Precision 380 "Server" computer runnimng Windows XP Professional.
This system was upgraded from 4 x 512 MB "Dell" PC-5300 DIMMs to two of these Crucial DIMMs. A memory transfer rate test before and after did not show as much improvement as expected. The improvement was only 10% from swapping from PC-5300(667 MHz) to PC-6400 (800 MHz)DIMMs.
Comparitive RAM timing and systems clocks status at first did not indicate what was wrong - the Crucial DIMMS were good for 667 or 800 MHz at the same 4-4-4-12 timings. Two free on-lime programs helped me discover that the original Dell DIMMs were PC-5300 DDR2 devices with 3-3-3-12 timing ! It is very difficult to find DIMMs at 3-3-3-12 or better timing at 1GB per DIMM, and at a reasonable price as compared to the Crucial BL12864AA80A.
Find yourself a copy of CpuID (CPU-Z) and MemSet programs online.
CPU-Z tells you what chipset you have in the syetem, the clock speeds, cache sizes, and RAM memory specs, etc. CPU-Z also provides a tab showing the manufacturer's (in this case Crucial Technology) RAM timings per device, at what system bus clock speed (Front side RAM clock 533, 667, 800 MHz),at what DIMM voltage, and the system Chipset type. CPU-Z does NOT allow you to change voltages, timings, or clocks. CPU-Z does show you the clock mulitiplier rate x6, x7, x9, ...x 15, etc. for the CPU main clock; and it does show the FrontSide Bus clock speed as a ratio of CPU clock to RAM clock.
MemSet allows you to change the computer's RAM timing registers for each DIMM in a slot by slot basis. MemTest works with a series of Intel chipsetss succh as the i955X, etc. MeSet is a nice program you can change RAM timings and apply them and if the system crashes - just reboot. You may also 'save' custom RAM timings and make them stay that way on each system reboot.
I was able to successfully apply new RAM timings without violating Crucial's specified 'limits' by more than a few clocks here and there. I had leeway to change the settings because the Crucial DIMMS are rated to 800Mhz and the max system Ram clock is 667. Since 667/800 is appximately 3/4ths - I set the 800MHz Crucial RAM timings to 3/4 less than 4-4-4-12. I ended up with 4-3-3-11 RAM timing on a 667 MHz RAM clock for the Crucial DIMMs. The result was a 25% improvement over the stock Dell 512Mb 3-3-3-12 DIMMs in 4 slots - and I have two more remaining DIMM slots to fill!
